2015-16

18th JUNE 2016

Have you noticed P4B's posters advertising their very own loaves and muffins at Scotmid stores?  P4B's own recipe specially made Breadwinner Bakery loaves and muffins will be on sale on Friday 17th June and Saturday 18th June at your local Scotmid stores in Warrender Park Road,  Marchmont Road & Leven Street. Expect very long bread queues! All proceeds generously go back to school. Thank you!

P4B had a wonderful, extraordinary experience with two workshops from The Breadwinner Bakery.  Sean and Lesley helped our pupils create their own loaves and muffins, worthy of a One Planet Picnic this weekend on Saturday's International Day for Picnics!
This is what they say about their company:

At The Breadwinner we’re passionate about baking. Since 1973 our master craftsmen bakers have been baking in Edinburgh – kneading and shaping dough by hand. We prefer to use traditional, simple methods and allow time to naturally enhance our products, rather than adding anything that would change the quality or flavour of our breads. We’re proud of our heritage – and work hard to supply breads, cakes and pastries that are locally made, freshly baked and full of flavour.

What a great conclusion to our bread experience! P4B went along to the Scotmid at Warrender Park Road where the Breadwinners Bakery and Scotmid had put on a great display of the bread and muffins we designed! There were posters and they had even made a loaf with the Sciennes school logo on it!
Then it was time to buy! We had the opportunity to buy the loaf and muffins ourselves in the shop but don't worry, we left a few!! Scotmid and the Breadwinners Bakery have very kindly said that the proceeds today and tomorrow will be given to the school! So good excuse for treating yourself to a great loaf and muffins!
What a truly great experience for P4B! Who again did themselves proud!

 10th JUNE 2016

When Toby McIntosh came second in City of Edinburgh's 20mph mascot competition, he won a smoothie bike session for his P7 class. Niall brought the bike, juice and fruit to school and they had great fun making delicious smoothies.

The class chose Sophie E's carton design as their favourite and she won a buff. Well done Sophie!

 15th MAY 2016

Sciennes' ECO Team has organised a clean up campaign in the local area around the school on Friday 20th May between 12.05pm and 1pm. Meet outside the school Hall to be given a tabard, gloves, a litter picker and bin bags.

Please email admin@sciennes.edin.sch.uk if you are able to come along and help out.
Thank you.

28th APRIL 2016

P4B had yet another lovely experience today with a workshop from The Breadwinner Bakery.  Sean and Lesley themselves came to tell us about themselves and to lead us in a workshop, worthy of a One Planet Picnic!

We saw a demonstration by the master himself, Sean, of how to make bread.  We had the opportunity to play with some dough, feel it, smell it and shape it.  Then in  our bakery groups we designed a bread, deciding on the ingredients we would like to add to our bread.  P4B worked hard together as it is a competition to make the best bread.  The Breadwinners Bakery supply Scotmid.  P4B are going to have their loaves made by the bakery and then it will be judged before being made and put into the 3 local Scotmid stores.  All the proceeds are going to be returned to school.  So a real win, win situation for us.

Not only did we devise a loaf we also got to come up with the ingredients for  a healthy muffin, as this is something else that Scotmid hope to sell.  We learnt about muffins and again  had a demonstration from Sean before planning our muffin in our groups.

Sean and Lesley are going to come in again in a couple of weeks to help P4B make their muffins.  Then a panel of judges are going to taste test the loaves and muffins and decide on the winers.  What exciting times.

P4B's classroom looked a little different to normal today.  And the smell was tantalising!

22nd APRIL 2016

On Friday 22nd April, we celebrated Earth Day by watching the Climate Coalition's film (scripted by Michael Morpurgo and starring Jeremy Irons) and Greenpeace's "Give the Earth a Hand" video.

We also commemorated the 400th Anniversary of the death of William Shakespeare (23rd April 1616) and asked pupils to play their part in making a difference.

A feeder ride will meet tomorrow at Sciennes at 11.00am to join the main Pedal on Parliament ride at 12.00pm on the Meadows, Saturday 23rd April, and pupils were encouraged to continue to walk, scoot and cycle to school, to play their part in tackling climate change.

P7 pupil, Toby Ward, showed how he had made a difference by donating his time volunteering at a local Food Bank as part of his Silver JASS award.

House Captains congratulated fellow pupils on recent achievements and reminded everyone about our annual Swimathon, taking place next week.

We informed pupils at both Assemblies this morning that the cones will be removed today, so our playground will be open fully on Monday 25th April.

8th MARCH 2016
Some of our Eco Team members were at the ready today with our brand new litter pickers and found... they didn't need to use them! Great impact from Arleen's ChangeWorks Litter Assembly on Friday with her message which challenged us all to reduce litter and waste and aim for a Grade 'A' playground! Let's keep it that way!

4th MARCH 2016

On Friday 4th March at Assembly, Arleen Sinclair from ChangeWorks successfully challenged P4-7 pupils to think about how we can reduce waste by recycling and re-using and how to make sure our playground and school are Grade A Litter Free. Our ECO team will meet next week (Waste Week) to discus and decide how to take forward improvements.

Some members of our community might be interested in supporting the upcoming Friends of the Earth Scotland Climate Change march at the Meadows November 28th 12pm

"Show your colours for climate, justice & jobs.

Join the worldwide movement marching for a better future.
Ahead of the UN climate change negotiations in Paris,
we’ll stand up for people affected by rising global temperatures
and demand that world leaders agree an ambitious deal.

A low carbon society will create green jobs, improve our transport and food systems and protect our land, air and water.
Scotland needs to show its colours in Paris and beyond
with strong action on climate change.

Wear your brightest colours as Scotland marches on this weekend of global action.

Everyone is encouraged to attend so please invite your friends, families and followers.

The march is organised by Stop Climate Chaos Scotland (SCCS), a diverse coalition of organisations in Scotland campaigning together on climate change. Coalition members include environment, faith and international development organisations, trade and student unions and community groups.

To have a fun and successful march, we are relying on volunteers to help us steward. Could you help us on the day? For more information send an email to Paul - paul@stopclimatechaosscotland.org

 28th OCTOBER 2015

Dear Parents/Carers and Pupils,

The Eco Team is organising a competition to collect pine or fir cones for our wonderful playground. During the October holidays we would like you to collect as many cones as possible and bring them into school by 23rd October when your class Rep will collect them in. The House Team that collects the most will win house points and an extra playtime. There will also be 6 individual winners (3 from P1-3 and 3 from P4-7). Cones brought in after the 23rd October will still be used but won’t count in the competition.

The Eco Group did a great job carrying and filling our new cone pit with all the fabulous cones collected during the holidays. KEEP COLLECTING!

3rd OCTOBER 2015

Please bring your cones in bag labelled with your name, class and House.

If you have any questions please speak to your Eco Rep.

Many thanks,

The Eco Team
